Abstract The purpose of this article is to raise the question of how to understand a similar form of Hangul, which existed before Hunminjeongeum (Hangul), which was published in the 15th century. The origin of Hunminjeongeum (Hangul) lies in the imitation of old letters(字倣古篆). This is a clue that supports the claim that there were proper characters even before Hunminjeongeum, but it has not been recognized yet. The author noted Sharp knife(尖首刀) of the ancient bronze coin, which was known to have been used during the Spring and Autumn Period (between A.D. 770 and 476). Each front of Sharp Knife(尖首刀) is casted with letters, which make it easier to study ancient characters because they are single characters(單字). Most of the characters inscribed on this Sharp Knife were Chinese characters, but for the first time, I discovered the shape of ‘ (no)’ and ‘ (don)’ letters similar to Hangeul. In order to distinguish it from the current Hangul, I tentatively want to call it "primitive Hangul" or "primitive form of Hangul". However, if you explain the difference between and characters in Korean, it is in the presence or absence of a consonant. It depends on whether or not a final consonant letter is present or not. Sharp Knife of characters can be interpreted by the current Korean system that the principle of the three complete syllables of consonants(first sound), medial(middle sound), and jongseong(final sound) is being applied. Until this primitive Hangeul disappeared and Hangeul was invented again, there was a hiatus for 2,000 years. Nevertheless, there are many similarities between Hangeul and its form. From this point of view, it cannot be said that the origin of Hangeul has nothing to do with the primitive form of Hangul in that it opens up the possibility that it can be retroactive to the past than Hunminjeongeum, which was created in the 15th century.
